Landmark High School Spring Plant Sale

Wow, it has been a long time since I have posted anything to my blog! First, please accept my apologies for my absence. It has been a busy and productive year for Landmark High School. We have learned so much about greenhouse and nursery management. Our students have worked tirelessly to nurture seedlings into some of the most beautiful annuals, perennials, grasses, herbs and flowering baskets I have ever seen and the fruits of our labors are now on sale to the public!

Not only are we making great strides in the greenhouse, but this advertisement was created by one of our very own students! A handful of teachers received training and generous grants of software from Adobe Corporation and SHIFT (SpyHop Productions Institute For Teachers) to teach Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premier. Our students have gained valuable and marketable skills for the 21st century workplace!

So, check out the pricing and availability below. Come see us and support our hard-working students!

So Much To Tell.

Well, it has been entirely too long since I have said anything about Landmark's green initiatives so I will attempt to catch up a bit. First, our aluminum can and plastic bottle "Recycle Rally" is underway and we have collected over 5,000 items for collection by Waste Management who has generously donated a dumpster to the school for this year. Waste Management and Pepsico have teamed up to offer incentives to schools who collect cans and bottles. The proceeds from this collection goes toward a program for  post-9/11 disabled veterans by helping them become successful entrepreneurs. You can see more details by following their website at www.dreammachinerecyclerally.com

Secondly, our greenhouse efforts were in full swing this fall thanks to the efforts of Mark Van Wagoner, Andy Neves and their students. We have just sold almost 200 poinsettias grown by students! Merry Christmas to us! It was a fun and educational opportunity. We have been very busy building a demonstration garden of raised beds near the greenhouse so the public will be able to see complimentary plants together in the spring during our bedding plant sale. We will also be growing planters for people to pick up in the spring so if you are interested in bringing a planter for us to fill an start, call the school at 801-798-4030.

Our school is transforming and we are all lucky to be a part of it!

Recycling Program Begins

Well, we finally kicked off the Recycle Rally for this year! The Leadership class organized the assembly for the student body complete with pictures and information, a student produced recycling public service announcement and some "Minute to Win It" games for advisory classes. All in all, the word is out and the work begins.

We are now competing through April 12th against schools across the country for "green" cash and prizes. We hope to win one of the large cash prizes of $10,000 or $50,000. This could go a long way in greening up our campus.  One of our goals is to pass the word to other schools in our district about the benefits of recycling in hopes that they, too, will become involved.

We want to continue to make a meaningful impact on our communities and show that although we are small in number, we are large in heart and strength. As our students have witnessed in years passed, it takes only one person to make a difference.

Landmark's Recycle Rally

It is a new school year at Landmark High, we are getting started on our recycling project, we are participating in the Recycle Rally from Pepsi. Help with what you can. Water bottles, soda bottles and soda cans are what we are recycling. All help is needed and greatly appreciated . Alcoholic containers are NOT welcome! We are looking forward to making a big change together as a community.

Construction Update

Construction on the greenhouse is coming along. In the meantime, we are getting ready for its completion with plantings now! Then we can move what we have grown into the greenhouse.

Our New Name - "It's All Green!"

OK, I've been thinking...scary, huh? We started this whole thing out as a recycling project at our school and my students did a fantastic job with our humble beginnings, but now we are constructing a greenhouse, vermi-composting (yes, that is worms), planting seedlings, teaching floriculture and getting ready to re-introduce RECYCLING in the fall to our new students.

*Groundbreaking for our greenhouse*

We came a long way this past school year and everything we have accomplished centers around a "green movement" in our communities. I say communities because my students come from all over the South Valley area and can make a positive "green" contribution in their respective home community.

So, to recognize the growth we have experienced, I changed our blog name just a bit. Maybe it will work, maybe when the students come back in the fall, they will come up with something better, but for now, I like it. Do you?

Winding Down

Winding down the school year this week. We are working on obtaining a recycling dumpster for school.

This was in the garbage - ugh! This can go in the paper recycling!

We have a paper recycling dumpster that ANYONE can donate to behind our school.

Here is what we can accept in the paper dumpster.
Help us raise money by donating. Thank you.
